blackberries

Summer may be over, but the weather hasn't gotten the message during the days, and it makes me so happy.  Britton and John and Lucy are all outside creating makeshift pools out of laundry tubs and storage bins.  They are so happy and wet and mucky.

For posterity's sake, and because I love making my blog posts into books, I'm going to be catching up on blogging from the summer.  And I'm going to start with one of our favorite parts of late summer:
Blackberries!

Any day with blackberries is simply fantastic.

Unless Lucy gets the last one.

{this was just before he fell over the side.  Luckily, my camera was strapped 'round my neck, and my supermom reflexes were working, and I caught him before he hit the ground.}

We picked a lot of blackberries.
Enough to make Blackberry jelly, 2 batches of regular jam, 2 batches of blackberry citrus jam (the absolute best jam I have ever tasted!), 2 blackberry cakes, blackberry french toast, and my first ever blackberry pie. I failed to seal the top crust and it ended up floating above the bubbling liquid.  Amateur's mistake.  At least it was delicious.  And I saved enough berries to make another one for the holidays.

Looks fantastic! We took a walk in the forest yesterday and ate a bunch of blackberries on the trail...but we didn't bring a bucket to collect them. Just ate and ate and ate.

Thank you for posting all of the cute pictures of your kids. It looks like the Tunnell berry picking gene is kicking in early. I didn't know you had tried your hand at pie baking. Well done!
