day tripping

During this particular family stage, I really like day trips. Nora doesn't sleep much. And trying to sleep elsewhere just makes it a thousand times worse. I calculated this problem. It was complex. I won't add it to this blog, but if you are looking for complex problems, James has started a blog to discuss the thesis he is working on.

Anyway, we have a summer bucket list with no overnight items on it, and although we do have camping and a hostel stay scheduled for our summer, our bucket list is purely for day tripping. And the Beatles have provided us with a really great theme song for our summer. Dang them for having 7 different chords in that song, 5 of which are unfamiliar. Every time I start feeling confidant with my ukelele skills, things like learning my twelfth chord (doesn't that sound like a lot?!), then I pick a random song that brings me down a few notches.

Today we marked off one of our bucket list items: go to a candy factory. We headed over the mountains to Cashmere and tried out the Aplets and Cotlets factory. It has the perfect kids tour. Ten minutes and tons of free samples. The kids did not actually like Aplets or Cotlets or any of their signature confections, but they thought the hair nets were funny, the factory was cool, and they had fancy lollipops for sale in their price range.  All in all, a success.

After the tour everyone was hungry for real food, so we headed over to Brian's Pizza and Bowling. Why are all bowling allies dark and shabby and have incredibly greasy pizza? Although, Brian's had all of these things, they were also very clean and had fantastic service. So we decided to stay for bowling. It wasn't on our bucket list, but why should that stop us? None of the kids had ever gone bowling. It was fun, but towards the end they started getting less enthusiastic about twirling and stealing each other's turns and more interested in cartoons. Also, they felt cheated if they got a strike, because then they only got to roll once on their turn.

Nora hates the bowling alley. So we made her keep score.
And I found out that it's really hard to bowl while holding a baby on your hop.

Now I know the rest of the story as to what happened after I picked up James in Cashmere. It sounds like you had a fun day.
