There are so many benefits to being part of an ALE school. Things like taking quirky classes, hanging out with other parents who want to give their kids something more than what they got out of public schools (and some are downright super talented), and getting box seats to the Pacific Northwest Ballet's production of The Nutcracker. The set was designed by Maurice Sendak. Many people like to think of Mr. Sendak as the creator of Where the Wild Things Are, but we recall him fondly as the illustrator of the Little Bear series. Some of the sweetest early readers ever written, and fantastically illustrated. So rare.
We brought a few first timers with us: Lucy, Grandma Becky, and our dear friend Edith, have never been to the Nutcracker, and none of us have had the opportunity to go to the Big City to see it. So we shined up our shoes and put on our Sunday best and headed out.
The girls were very uncooperative for pictures. Above, Lucy is hiding behind our group picture. Below, All of the girls are sharing their best sugar plum fairy pose. Eyes are not allowed to be open.
We also went out to breakfast at one of our favorite bakeries. Everyone had some form of a crescent roll. They just looked so tempting!
Happy Box Seat Faces. They were sitting in the front row of our private box, but after a few scares (we were second tier, right above the orchestra), we decided that everybody needed a big person partner. That took care of hanging over the side of the balcony.
It would not be a complete Nutcracker trip if I didn't fall asleep during the first half... I tried, I really did. The costumes were amazing. The set was beautiful. I was sitting next to Edie and she tried elbowing me, and she was so full of enthusiasm that I'm not sure how it happened. But it did, and I missed the giant growing tree that so many people had told us about. and the battle scene. Woops.
It was a wonderful time. And we've been basically living off of gingerbread men and Christmas goodies ever since. Anybody know how to make sugar plums?

Sounds like a fun time - doesn't sound like a very peaceful nap though.
I don't think naps get any better than in the theatre...except in conference. Those are fantastic ones, too. Ha ha ha.
