super cool idea!

Have you seen my countertops? They look a little like this:

I know. There is so much more work than just the countertops. But I need to start somewhere right? My mom tells me I should just gut the whole place and start over. But who really has the money for that?

Besides There are some really cool features in my kitchen! Not only do I have swirly gray stained and mostly disgusting countertops and sink, we have:

A hidden chimney! At some point there was no kitchen where there is a kitchen now, and instead of taking off the exterior chimney, someone decided to just wall over it.

A vintage double-sided oven, that basically works great and comes with all original manuals. I still want to frame one. I love the housewife with steaming casserole on the cover.

Flour and sugar bins built in as well as some other interesting and entertaining shelving, like the rolling shelf that Lucy discovered and rolled all the way to her bedroom one day.

So for now I just want to do something about the ugly swirly gray countertops. And stumbled upon this idea:

$35 counter redo by Kelli

What do you think? James still thinks we should tile. But the lazy person in me thinks that not everyone wants tile in their kitchen, grout catches everything, and this will be way faster and cheaper!

Don't do tile! Grout is the worst! I like the $35 way better.

I love all your post about your house. They get me excited to do some DIY projects in my own house someday.

Flour and sugar bins are awesome! My parents put some in when they remodeled their house back when I was in grade school. It depends on what tile you were thinking about doing in your kitchen. My parents have granite tile in the house they live in now and the space between the tiles isn't very big so the grout doesn't catch as much. But for the sake of budgeting I would say just do the $35 fix.

tile is unsanitary. don't do it.

Sorry, James, another vote against tile. It is hard to clean (grout), get mildew a LOT easier, the grout shows stains (think tomato juice), and it is a pain to write on. If your pen goes pas the tile, you poke through the paper. I like the $35 idea. Very nice and chic looking :).
